What is your qualification as a teacher?
I hold a doctorate degree in piano, with extensive teaching experience at the University level and in my private studio. Above all, I love teaching piano!
Are private lessons the same for all students?
Each student is unique, and I design my private lessons around the learning styles of every student. What I teach is based on goals that are set in the lessons, agreed upon by student and teacher.
Do you offer recitals?
Yes. Students are given performance opportunities in May and December in our two studio recitals. Festivals and competitions are also offered in the fall and spring. As an RCM examiner, I also encourage interested students to prepare for RCM performance exams.
What is taught in lessons?
Students may study following the RCM curriculum, which includes repertoire, etudes, technique, ear training, and theory or a more relaxed pace of study. All students, regardless of age and level, are taught to read music and develop listening skills. Improvisation, composition, and study of popular repertoire is also integrated into lessons.
What if I need help navigating an online piano or theory course?
The courses are designed for self-study but should you struggle with accessing your course, contact kathy@pianoprogram.com via email with any questions about accessing or navigating your course.
Should I sign up for private lessons or a course?
ALL of my private students also sign up for my online music theory courses. You may also sign up for these courses if you study with another teacher or are learning on your own. The piano courses are my way of extending my teaching to anyone interested in learning, at an affordable price.
What ages do you teach?
I enjoy teaching all ages, from elementary to adults! The average age for starting piano lessons is 6 or 7. However, beginners of any age can start and progress at their own pace..
How much is tuition?
Tuition is the same every month from September-May and charged per lesson June-August. Tuition is due the 1st of the month. An annual enrollment fee is invoiced annually in August. Contact me for current tuition rates.
What if I missed a lesson?
If you miss a lesson for any reason, you can forfeit that lesson, opt for a zoom or video lesson (as many as you need) or an in-person makeup lesson (offered once per semester). Lessons missed by Dr. Winston will be rescheduled. No refunds or credits given for missed lessons.
Do you teach adults?
Yes! I teach both adult beginners and adults who have studied music for many years. I teach students ages 6 and up.
